The Hekman Library, as a selective depository library in the Federal
Depository Library Program, selects documents in various electronic
formats (CD-ROM, diskettes, DVD, and Internet). The library makes every
effort to made documents in electronic formats accessible to all
library users under the following guidelines:
Internet access of government information is available at no charge in the Digital Research Center for members of the Calvin Community and Public Kiosk Computers for Guests and Alumni.
At the present time users who need to access information on
diskette, CD-ROM, or DVD may use the standalone PC outside the
documents office. Most of these iems can also be checked out.
The Hekman Library attempts to meet the requirements of the
latest “Recommended Specifications for Public Access Work Stations in
Federal Depository Libraries.”
The documents staff makes
tangible electronic products available to the public in a timely
manner, usually within two weeks of receipt. Items that require
hardware not owned or available at the library, or that are of a
limited and specialized nature are made available for circulation.
The Hekman Digital Library maintains pages for government information at the federal level as well as at the state and local level.
The
Hekman Library has the capability to email and fax government
information to distance users in accordance with its policies on faxing
and emailing other information.
Currently, the library
charges for printing. The cost is .05 cents a page for members of the
Calvin Community and .10 page for Guests and Alumni. If a user needs to
download files he or she should use the PC in the documents area.
If
temporary storage of electronic government information is needed, users
may use the PC outside the documents office. Storage space is limited
to what is available on the PC, and storage time is limited to one week
unless other arrangements are made. Use of stored information will
occur at time mutually agreed upon by the user and the documents staff.
All the librarians in The Hekman Library are willing to
help users access electronic government information. If the level of
expertise required is above that of the reference staff members, a
special appointment with the documents librarian or the digital resources staff may be required.
The documents librarian
conducts hands-on classes for the reference staff, and is also asked to
make presentations for students on the use of government documents in
all formats, including electronic. The documents librarian is available
for one-on-one appointments to assist all users, including those from
the congressional district, in the use of government information in
electronic formats.
