Faculty Services Journal Ordering

Journal Ordering

(see also Book Ordering)

There are three methods of acquiring new journals. In all cases, requests for new periodical subscriptions must have the approval of the entire department (item 9 on page 79 of the Handbook for Teaching Faculty).

  1. If the cost of the journal is minimal (less than $75), the journal can be added without penalty. Contact your department's Library Liaison.
  2. If the journal is more than $75, the department may be asked to cancel a journal of equal value. The penalty may be waived if the department can demonstrate that the current collection of journals is inadequate to support the curriculum. For example, many speech disorder journals were canceled in the early 90's because the Communication Disorders program in CAS was dying. However, in the late 90's, the program grew significantly. Because of this revival, several speech disorder journals were added without penalty. Contact your department's Library Liaison.
  3. At the time of course approval via EPC, new journal titles may be added to the collection. The following statement was approved by Faculty Senate at its November 2, 1998, meeting. "All proposals for new courses and/or programs (shall) include an evaluation of library resource implications based on an assessment of book collections, databases, journals." During a joint review conducted by the library staff and a department representative, a list of new journals needed to support the new course will be created. These new titles will, in most cases, be added to the collection without the penalty described in 2. above. Contact the chair of EPC or the library director, or read this web page for more information.
