Gale's Literary Index


Gale's Literary Index is a free index to more than 130 literary criticism and literary biography reference sets. Hekman owns many of these reference sets (up to 2008) in print in the Reference Collection; read the full annotation to see a list of the sets owned by the library (with call numbers). Online full-text access is also available for a number of these titles (selected coverage from 1998-current) through the database Literature Resource Center.

MLA International Bibliography


The MLA International Bibliography is a subject index for books, articles and websites published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics. MLA International Bibliography dates back to 1925 and contains over 2 million citations from more than 4,400 periodicals and 1,000 book publishers. Subscription to the MLA International Bibliography also includes access to the MLA Directory of Periodicals database.

By Reinder P. Meijer. 1978. 2d ed. 402 pp. A trustworthy history of Dutch-language literature, from earliest times to the present day. Dated, but good bibliography.

The Netherlands (World Bibliographical Series)

- Z2431 .K56 1988
A bibliography compiled by Peter King and Michael Wintle. Though dated (published in 1988), it provides a classified, annotated bibliography of topics such as geography, history, languages and dialects, religion, politics, economy, education, transportation, literature and the arts.

For a general guide to searching WebCat, the library's online catalog, see the library's guides Searching WebCat-Basic or Searching WebCat - Advanced. Here are some representative formats for subject headings relevant to topics in Dutch Literature:

  • Dutch fiction
  • Dutch poetry
  • Authors, Dutch

A good way to find specific LC Subject Headings is to use WebCat to look up the bibliographic record of a book on your topic. Read the description and information in that record. Near the end of that information several LC Subject Headings will be given as links. If you click on these, the catalog will lead you to other books on that topic.
