"Free" versus the "Restricted" Web

You may hear librarians or professors distinguish between the “free Web” and the resources you can find through Hekman Library's web site. The “free Web” is just that—resources available for free to anyone with access to the Internet. Hekman Library’s research databases and electronic journals also are on “the Web,” but they are available to the Calvin community only through paid subscriptions, accessible on campus or through a KnightVision password. These library resources are sometimes called the “restricted” Web.

You will want to be especially careful of what you find on the free Web, since there is less control over what is published there. Read these tips for evaluating your sources, including those on the free Web.
