Search Tips Searching WebCat

WebCat - Basic Search

WebCat Basic Search

Basic Search options:

  • Keyword, Search Everything - searches for the word(s) anywhere in the record
  • Keyword, Author/ Title/ Subject/ Series/ Periodical Title - searches for the word(s) anywhere in that field
  • Browse - search results will be returned alphabetically (especially helpful if you are looking for a specific title, author, or subject)

Other Tips
:

  • Searching for an author? If you are doing a Browse search, put the last name first, or you can even put in only the first few letters of the last name.
  • Subject searches the Library of Congress Subject HeadingsĀ that are assigned to each item. Subject headings are not necessarily intuitive but will lead you to specific results on the topic. Use natural language (the words you think of first) and search by Keyword. Then browse for those words in the Subject index. Cross references will give you other possible terms to search.
  • Do not search for periodical articles in WebCat. WebCat contains records for the periodical title, but not the articles themselves. WebCat will tell which periodicals that the Hekman Library owns or can access, where they are located, and how much we hold. Search the Research Databases for articles.

WebCat - Advanced Search

The Advanced Search screen is useful for complex search statements and for locating specific items. For example, if you wanted to find all items that have the word "evolution" in the title and the word "Christianity" in the subject field, you might try the search illustrated below:

WebCat Advanced Search

Advanced Search options:

  • Limit your search by: Publication Year, Language, Location, and Format.
  • Control how your results will be returned by changing the Sort By option.
  • Combine search fields using Boolean terms. Most commonly used:
    • AND = both terms must be present (result: narrows your search)
    • OR = either term can be present (result: broadens your search)

For more information on these options, click on the underlined labels. For help with other advanced search techniques (such as truncation or types of "search punctuation"), and also a listing of WebCat location labels, click on the Question Button button at the top of the WebCat screen.

Other Search Screens

Call # Browse allows you to act as if you are scanning the physical library shelves. From your results of a subject or keyword search, identify the call number(s) where many of your valid hits are located. Then use the Call # Browse screen to see what else we have in that area:

Reserve Browse lets you see what items have been put on reserve in the library by professors. (Use the 2nd Floor Circulation Desk to check out these reserve items.)
