Handbook of Latin American Studies


The Handbook of Latin American Studies is a bibliography on Latin America consisting of works selected and annotated by scholars and edited by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. Each year approximately 130 scholars from around the world choose 5,000 works for inclusion alternating between the social sciences and the humanities.

Published since 1954, Historical Abstracts is the leading electronic bibliography for historical study with indexing for more than 2,000 journals. In addition to key historical journals from virtually every major country Historical Abstracts includes a selection of hundreds of journals in the social sciences and humanities that are of special interest to researchers and students of history.

JSTOR


JSTOR is a database consisting of only full-text articles from interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journals. Journals are included on the basis of number of subscribers the journal has, citation analysis, recommendations from experts in the field, and the length of time that the journal has been published. Coverage for each title begins with the first publication, with most titles ending coverage between three and five years ago.

Cambridge History of Latin America

Authoritative multi-volume history of the political, economic, social, intellectual, and cultural history of Latin America, with an emphasis on the period since the establishment of independent states. Each chapter has a bibliographic essay (found at the end of each volume).

Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture

Contains over 5000 articles, from lengthy essays on various issues to short biographies, each with further bibliographic references.

Historical Atlas of Central America

- G1551 .S1 H2 2003
Sections 1-2 contain a cartographic presentation of 500 years of territorial organization, demography, and culture. Sections 3-5 focus on political, social, and economic issues specific to each country, beginning in the colonial period.

Oxford Encyclopedia of Mesoamerican Cultures: The Civilizations of Mexico and Central America

- F1218.6 .O95 2001
A three-volume encyclopedia containing over 600 articles which include biographies, general contextual essays, and articles on very specific topics. Each article is signed and recommends current bibliography for further study. The geographic area covered includes Mexico through southern Mesoamerica. Emphasis is placed on the past, but contemporary cultural groups are also covered.

A convenient way to see the full-text of more recent issues of important historical journals. These are made available through Hekman Library's institutional subscriptions, so most of them are not accessible to non-Calvin users.

 A good way to find more specific LC Subject Headings is to look up the bibliographical record of a book on your topic in the catalog, and then read the description and information that is provided for it in the online record. Towards the end of the information several LC Subject Headings will be given as links. If you click on these, the catalog will call up other books on that topic in the collection.

You may want to start with a keyword search, then read the information provided in several of the bibliographical records for several books, and locate the subject headings given there. Then click on the subject heading link to discover other books on that topic.
