Calvin introduced a new International Development Studies major in the fall of 2005. Hekman Library is strong in international research and study resources. The items identified below represent just a small, though highly recommended, part of the total resources available.

ABI/INFORM


ABI/INFORM is a premier source of English language business, accounting and economics information from around the world. Over 1 million citations from 1971 to the present provide complete bibliographic information, indexing, informative abstracts, and selected full-text articles from more than 1,000 business journals.

ABI/INFORM contains information on more than 60,000 companies as well as executive profiles, reports on market conditions, and in-depth case studies of global business trends. More than 350 of the database's sources are English-language titles published outside the U.S.

Aluka


Aluka logoAluka is an international collaborative initiative building an online digital library of scholarly resources from and about Africa. Aluka includes high-quality scholarly content from institutions and individuals across the globe and features powerful tools for research, teaching, collaboration, and knowledge exchange.

Scholarly materials contributed by Aluka’s partners, range from archival documents, periodicals, books, reports, manuscripts, and reference works, to three-dimensional models, maps, oral histories, plant specimens, photographs, and slides.

Hekman Library access to Aluka is currently free of cost. The possibility of a subscription will be considered when complementary access expires. If you are benefiting from this resource please contact us.

The research database of choice for economics majors. Provides citations and selected abstracts and covers topics including regional and international economics, urban economics, economic development, fiscal and monetary theory, business and public finance.

Emerald E-Journals


Emerald E-journals includes full-text access to over 100 international peer-reviewed journals pertaining to: business and management aspects of accounting, architecture, education, engineering, environmental management, food and nutrition, healthcare, hospitality, human resources, information and library, logistics and supply chains, operations and production, public sector, quality, and training.

Europa World Plus


Europa World Plus incorporates the full text contents of some of the Europa World Year Book and the eight Europa regional surveys. This database provides authoritative and current analytical information about countries and international organizations. Country overviews include historic, economic, trade, and political information.

General OneFile (formerly InfoTrac Onefile)


General OneFile, formerly called InfoTrac Onefile, is a large, multi-subject database, with records from 1980 to the present. More than 11,000 sources are indexed, most with full-text coverage. Sources include U.S. and international newspapers, popular magazines, academic journals, trade and professional publications, multimedia, and general reference sources.

JSTOR


JSTOR is a database consisting of only full-text articles from interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journals. Journals are included on the basis of number of subscribers the journal has, citation analysis, recommendations from experts in the field, and the length of time that the journal has been published. Coverage for each title begins with the first publication, with most titles ending coverage between three and five years ago.

LexisNexis Academic


LexisNexis Academic is an extensive set of full-text electronic databases of news, business, company, and legal information. It contains major archives of federal and state case law, media transcripts, and other full-text material. For more information consult the LexisNexis Academic help documents and/or search tutorial.

PAIS International and PAIS Archive


Since its establishment in 1914, the Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS) has chronicled issues in the public debate through highly selective coverage of a wide variety of sources. The PAIS International database with the PAIS Archive provide historical perspective on many of the 20th century's public and social policies.

Wilson Select Plus


The Wilson Select Plus database provides indexed and abstracted records with accompanying full-text periodical articles (1994 to the present) from over 2000 sources, including U.S. and international professional publications, academic journals, and trade magazines. Encyclopedia of the Developing World

A 3-volume reference concentrating on the post 1945 period.  Entries are alphabetic by theme, country, region, organization, person, and topic, and "provides a ready reference work for understanding issues that affect approximately three quarters of the globe's residents."--Introduction.  All articles are signed and have bibliographies.    Features articles on an extensive number of organizations and provides lengthier coverage on regions than on individual countries.

A good historical encyclopedia with alphabetical arrangement by person, place, event (e.g. treaties) or term ("microstate").

The Human Development Report (HDR) examines issues associated with rich and poor countries: migration, predatory extremism, and the expansion of cultural diversity. It also proposes policy to promote cultural liberty and multicultural democracy.

An annual statistical publication of the Asian Development Bank, providing historical and current economic, financial, environment and social statistics on the Bank's thirty nine developing member countries (DMCs).

Socio-Economic Institutes in Sub-Saharan Africa


The African Development Information site has a list of many socio-economic research centers--private, university, governmental--with hot links.  This can lead to many reports which often can then be located free of charge through a scholar.google.com or www.google.com search on the titles in quotes.

Everything International


Portal to valuable, free Internet resources relevant to global business. Sections are divided into such categories as Country and Regional Data, Company and Industry Data, etc. All links are updated every 20 days, so this site is very current and very accurate. Especially valuable to locate industry information and market opportunities for all countries of the world, including the developing countries.

Free the World.Com


Web site of the Economic Freedom Network of 71 research institutes, including the Cata Institute and the Canadian Fraser Institute. Their annual "Economic Freedom of the World" report is available free as a pdf, along with extensive excel downloads of the data which ranks 130 economies on a 1-10 scale in five categories: size of govenment; legal structure/security of propertyrights; access to sound money; freedom to exchange with foreigners; and regulation of credit, labor and business.

A major and very accessible site for free and interactive data on the poor throughout the world. Contains a downloadable book entitled Where the Poor Are: An Atlas of Poverty.

Global Health Facts


"GlobalHealthFacts.org, a project of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, provides free, up-to-date and easy-to-access data by country on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other key health and socio-economic indicators."

Global Legal Information Network


"The Global Legal Information Network (GLIN) is a public database of laws, regulations, judicial decisions, and other complementary legal sources contributed by governmental agencies and international organizations. The Hudson Institute and the Center for Global Prosperity

This site contains a list of core issues related to globalization with some supporting full-text reports.  It also includes many significant and high quality video clips.  Of particular value is YaleGlobal Online, which includes a history and definition, along with academic papers, book reviews and exerpts, links to external Web sites, and multimedia presentations.
