Ancient Philosophy Subject Guide


	Introduction The study of philosophy is closely tied to the study of history, theology, and religion. Be prepared to examine those subject guides also when working on a philosophy research project. As a general rule, research tools for history, theology, and religion will not be included in this subject guide. Also, all disciplines have a "philosophy of..." component. For example, researchers can study the philosophy of education, politics, history, science, medicine, and so on. This guide includes only research tools for the study of philosophy as a discipline. 	Research Databases (Consult this list for interdisciplinary databases) History of Science, Technology, and medicine HSTM is the definitive international database for the history of science, technology, and medicine. It reflects the influences of these fields on society and culture from prehistory to the present and offers outstanding value for interdisciplinary research. It contains citations from nearly 10,000 sources. View: Online JSTOR JSTOR is a database consisting of only full-text articles from interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journals. Journals are included on the basis of number of subscribers the journal has, citation analysis, recommendations from experts in the field, and the length of time that the journal has been published. Coverage for each title begins with the first publication, with most titles ending coverage between three and five years ago. View: Online Philosopher's Index The Philosopher's Index provides indexing and abstracts from books and journals of philosophy and related fields. View: Online Annotation WorldCat (Public) WorldCat (Public) is a global network of library content. This WorldCat site provides some services and functionality not offered on the other WorldCat site, but the content is identical. WorldCat is ideal for locating research sources not owned by Calvin so that the sources can be acquired through InterLibrary Loan. View: Online


	Reference Materials Bibliographies of Philosophers' Writings (This is not a book, but a search aid for locating material in the Reference collections.) All author bibliographies are filed alphabetically by author in the Z8000 - Z8999 call number range in the reference collections (Check the theological reference on 4th floor, too!). For example, a bibliography of the writings by and about William James will be found after "Henry James" and before "James Joyce." Generally, only very famous and prolific writers will be found in this area. View: Annotation Bibliography of Philosophical Bibliographies - Z7125 A1 G83 A bibliography is a collection of works about a person or subject. These are essential research tools and should always be sought because someone has already done the legwork of gathering together in one place important resources on a person or subject. It begins in 1450 and ends in 1974 and collects in all languages. View: In Print Annotation Collaborative Bibliography of Women in Philosophy - Z7125 H83 1997 The compilers have gather more than 11,000 works written by women in philosophy throughout history and in all places. View: In Print Annotation Dictionary of the History of Ideas: Studies of Selected Pivotal Ideas - CB5 D52 The ideas discussed in this work go beyond philosophical ideas. However, a significant number are directly related to philosophical issues. View: Online In Print Annotation Resources in Ancient Philosophy: An Annotated Bibliography - Z7125 B39 1991 An extensive bibliography listing more than 7,000 sources for the study of Western ancient philosophy. View: In Print Annotation Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy - B41 R68 1998 This ten-volume work is considered to be the authoritative encyclopedia for philosophy. View: In Print Annotation Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy The SEP is a major scholarly resource for the study of philosophy. It is not as complete as the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, but it is available online and the information is reliable. View: Online Annotation


	Web Sources Erratic Impact's Philosophy Research Base The Philosophy Research Base serves as a portal for a wide variety of research sources for students and teachers in philosophy and related subjects. View: Online Annotation


	Periodicals ejournal locator (SFX) The Hekman Library ejournal locator provides title and subject access to all the electronic journals subscribed to by the Hekman Library. View: Online Annotation

Most schools of thought in philosophy find their roots in the writings of one person.

To find books about the philosopher, enter the last name in WebCat Basic search and click the Subject button.
To find books by the philosopher, enter the last name in the WebCat Basic search and click the Author button.
To locate bibliographies on the author, go to the Advanced search screen. Enter the philosopher's last name in the first box. In the second box, enter the word bibliography then select Subject in the drop-down menu.
The library owns a vast number of original works of philosophers in electronic form. Use WebCat to locate this material. Follow the instructions above.
