Searching and Browsing Tips
Subject headings can offer a more accurate and comprehensive way of searching than keyword searching. Subject headings are often found on the side of search results or within a book or article record (summary).

Remember to try searching for art by the country, time period, medium, or style, as well as for particular artists by name.

Special Resource: Images
Most of the resources listed here are available only to Calvin users, but if you're looking for open access images (free or public domain), check out the suggestions in one of these comprehensive guides created by other librarians:
- Oxford Art OnlineThis rich resource features over 45,000 signed articles, 5,500 images, 40,000 image links, timelines of world art, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) lesson plans, and links to ARTstor. Once you've searched for a topic, limit your results under "Format" to find actual images
- Hekman Digital Archive (Art History & Instructional Aids)Includes examples of key artists' works (from slides). Each image is thoroughly described and can be loaded in medium or high resolution. Instructional aids are organized into folders: architecture, ceramics, fiber, and maps. *Note that you will need to log in using your Calvin username and password.
- Google Art ProjectMuseums large and small, classic and modern, world-renowned and community-based from over 40 countries have contributed more than 40,000 high-resolution images of works ranging from oil on canvas to sculpture and furniture.
