
To explore scholarly library reference sources, check out the suggestions in the library's subject guide(s) related to your speech topics. You can also ask me or another librarian for a suggestions of relevant encyclopedias!
Two other options in Primo would be to limit to "Reference Entries" as a source type, or search for your topic by keyword and one of these limiting terms: encyclopedia, dictionary, reference, handbook.
Tips for finding background info on the web:
In addition to using our Primo search tool on the library's homepage, you may want to focus your search in a subject-specific database (choose a relevant subject area in the drop-down menu) or one of our interdisciplinary databases, which may focus on certain source type (peer-reviewed articles or pro/con topics).
Two helpful interdisciplinary databases:

Coverage on a wide range of topics. Includes peer-reviewed full text for STEM research, as well as for the social sciences and humanities. Scholarly content covers a broad range of important areas of academic study, including anthropology, engineering, law, sciences and more. Academic Search Complete also offers access to video content from the Associated Press, the world’s leading news agency.



This database allows users to search two collections of the New York Times. The ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The New York Times with Index collection covers 1851-2017. The ProQuest Recent Newspapers: The New York Times covers 2008 - recent (3-month embargo).
Researchers can move beyond key words to search for articles by subject, company, location, person, or creative work. Research outcomes are further enhanced through the addition of abstracts, detailed citation information, as well as topic headings for further exploration. Every issue of includes the complete paper, cover-to-cover, with full-page and article images in PDF format.

The Wall Street Journal (Eastern edition) offers access not only top news stories but also detailed information on the arts, sports, business, and popular culture dating back to 1984.

This resource provides coverage for several of the most popular and heavily-researched biographies and genres, including those contained within Biography Today and Biography (both dating back to the first issue published).
In addition to keyword searching, Biography Reference Center users can locate biographies of interest by browsing key categories, including occupation, nationality, publication and more than 30 genre categories including actors, artists, athletes, authors, current world leaders, explorers, scientists and many others. Results can also be limited by reading level indicators (Lexiles) and source types that include concise and detailed biographies, interviews, obituaries and related articles. Users can also limit results according to any combination of subject occupation, activity, gender, birth place, birthday, lifespan, nationality and more.
Additionally, we have many encyclopedias and biographical resources in the library's print Reference Collection (4th floor), and there may be biographical sources in our regular collection too. Try searching Hekman's catalog for your person's name, look at the suggested background sources in the library's Subject Guides (choose a subject related to your topic), or ask a librarian for other recommendations!
