There is a long history of submissions of gravamina by classes or individuals within the Christian Reformed Church. Two examples are an 1898 gravamen questioning the role of the magistracy and one from 1914 that sought to challenge the translation of a question and answer in the Heidelberg Catechism. Per the Church Order and Its Supplements, Article 5, a gravamen is a document submitted by a current office bearer (or nominee). The Church Order addresses individual office bearers in its provisions for gravamina. Any individual office bearer may file a gravamen with his or her council.
