The "issue of human sexual identity and expression has consumed our Western, post-Christian culture. The Church has not decided to simply engage the culture with Biblical faith, but we are asking many of the same questions the culture has been asking, and we’re coming up with some of the same answers.
Baptized and confessing Christians in the CRC are questioning God’s creation of male and female. They are questioning the intent and authority of the Bible about God’s purposes for sex, marriage, and romantic love. Some of our own congregations and families are dividing over different answers to the questions of human sexuality and expression, and what Jesus did or did not die for."

Lundberg contends that ambiguities related to a historically situated Latin theological term (status confessionis) are getting in the way of the denomination’s clear thinking about complex and sensitive issues related to sexuality in our own historical moment.

"A committee that reported to Synod 1999 surveyed clergy and found that 74% said they knew the 1973 report well; 25% said they knew only about the distinction made in 1973 or else knew almost nothing about the report; and 65% percent said the pastoral care guidelines of 1973 were not effectively carried out in their congregations."
